What to Wear for a Romantic Beach photo shoot

Admittingly, Professional Engagement Photography Can Be Overwhelming, having your photograph taken can be somewhat intimidating, even when it is simply on a friend’s iPhone.

Consequently, when it comes to having your engagement photographs taken by a professional, there can understandably be some anxiety regarding how to present yourself in the best light for them.

It is important to recognize that this is a common experience, and most couples discuss this with me. This is precisely why I have compiled some of the most effective tips I possess for ensuring that you appear and feel your best during your engagement session.

Cultivate Your Personal Style and Prioritize Comfort in Your Wardrobe Choices

Prioritize comfort and personal style when selecting your engagement attire. Comfort is paramount, as discomfort can be evident on camera. Trust your intuition when choosing outfits that make you feel confident. Some couples opt for elaborate, dressed-up outfits, while others prefer a more casual yet polished look.

Most couples choose to wear two outfits during their engagement session: one for a casual date and another for a formal occasion. This approach provides two distinct looks, with the casual outfit often serving as a warm-up for the formal session.

If you prefer a touch of elegance, don’t hesitate to embrace it. Your engagement session is an ideal opportunity to wear a fun, dressed-up outfit that you might not normally wear. Long, flowing dresses and skirts are visually appealing on camera, adding movement that enhances your natural beauty. However, if you and your partner are casual and prefer a more understated look, feel free to choose outfits that align with your preferences.

Color Palette Selection and Coordination for Your Engagement Session Attire

When coordinating colors, it is important to focus on creating a harmonious blend rather than exact matching. If both partners wore the same exact color tone to their engagement session, the resulting images would likely lack visual interest.

For instance, if one partner wore a blush dress, a soft blue chunky necklace, and nude heels, the other partner could complement the outfit with a navy coat, khaki or gray pants, brown leather shoes, and possibly a blush pocket square.

This approach involves tying in the main color that the other partner is wearing (blush for the first partner, navy for the second partner) while creating a well-coordinated look that avoids excessive matchiness.

Generally, it is advisable to select lighter tones and more muted shades. While bright and bold colors (such as hot pink or cherry red) can be visually striking, they may sometimes divert attention away from the faces of the individuals wearing them.

However, it is important to note that this rule can be broken when executed effectively. Occasionally, a pop of color can be the ideal addition to an engagement session color palette.

For example, Bethany’s yellow sweater (below) enhanced the overall look of her and Patrick’s ensemble. The key to achieving this was incorporating a single, prominent pop of color, whose tone was subtle enough to complement the overall color scheme. As with many aspects of life, balance is essential in achieving a visually appealing outcome.

Enhancing Your Appearance During Your Session

Before delving into this section, I want to assure you that you will look absolutely stunning at your session. However, it is important to acknowledge that you are human and it is natural to have certain features that you may be self-conscious about. This section is intended to provide guidance if you suspect that you may be overly critical of certain aspects of your appearance. If this resonates with you, the most effective strategy is to identify any areas that you may be self-conscious about and select clothing that best complements those feelings. When you wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident, you will naturally exude that confidence on camera.

Here are some common areas of concern:

Arms: Three-quarter length sleeves can create a slimming effect on all arms. Consider bringing a stylish jacket, blazer, or cardigan along. Skinny straps or strapless dresses can have the opposite effect, so it is advisable to avoid them if you find yourself fixated on your arms.

Legs: Heels tend to elongate the appearance of women’s legs, particularly closed-toe heels. If you decide to wear peep-toe heels, ensure that you have well-groomed toenails prior to your session.

Height Differences: Height differences can manifest in both directions. Make sure that you are comfortable with your shoe height and the relative positioning of your legs if this is a concern for you. Overcompensating with a subtle dip down or a tiptoe up can transform a charming pose into an awkward appearance.

Regardless of the specific concern, it is crucial to remember that you look incredible. When you feel comfortable and confident, it truly radiates through your appearance.

Enhance Your Session Outfits with Layers and Accessories

Embrace the art of layering and incorporating accessories such as jackets, sweaters, necklaces, scarves, and belts to add depth and dimension to your photographs. Layers like jackets, sweaters, and scarves also facilitate the creation of multiple distinct “looks” without the need for significant outfit alterations.

While most patterns are suitable for photography, graphics may not be the most ideal choice. If you are wearing a patterned outfit, ensure that it does not overpower or distract from your appearance. Similarly to selecting colors, our primary objective is to draw attention to your faces rather than your clothing.

Empty your pockets, literally. This advice is particularly pertinent to men. Regrettably, you may find it disconcerting to see your mobile phone or keys protruding from your pockets.

Enhancing Your Wedding Appearance with Professional Makeup and Hair

Professional hair and makeup can be an exceptional choice for enhancing your wedding appearance. It not only creates a visually stunning look but also alleviates the stress associated with self-care. Additionally, it serves as an effective means of bolstering your confidence.

If your wedding is within a local vicinity, your engagement session presents an ideal opportunity to conduct a makeup trial. Initially, it may be challenging to feel comfortable with the amount of makeup applied, as it surpasses what would typically be worn on a regular day.

However, it is important to recognize that this is a common experience. Nevertheless, a skilled makeup artist possesses the expertise to achieve the perfect balance for the camera. Engaging in this trial during your engagement session allows you to observe how the makeup translates onto the camera. Remember that there is no recourse on your wedding day, making this a prudent step to ensure your satisfaction.

Furthermore, it is advisable to consider getting your ring cleaned and your nails done during this shoot, as they will also draw attention.

Engagement Session Outfit Tips for Men

For your engagement session photos, opt for long pants and closed-toed shoes to exude sophistication and masculinity. Conversely, shorts and open-toed shoes may draw attention to your legs and feet, while the former creates a sleek and polished appearance. Suit pants, dress pants, or colored pants are ideal choices. Brown leather dress shoes complement nearly every outfit, whether you’re wearing a full suit, blazer, or simply a collared shirt.

Communicate with your partner to ensure that you both adhere to a consistent level of formality. It’s common for one partner to prefer more formal attire than the other, so finding a mutually agreeable balance is crucial for your engagement photos.

As previously discussed, layering can add depth and interest to your photos. Blazers, vests, and coats provide versatile options for multiple looks without altering your outfit. Additionally, ties, bow ties, pocket squares, colored socks, belts, tie clips, suspenders, and watches can serve as decorative accessories. Utilize these accessories to harmonize your coordinating colors.

Engagement Session Packing List

To ensure a successful engagement session, please consider the following items to bring:

* Comfortable footwear: Flats or flip-flops are ideal for walking between photo locations,  especially if you plan to wear heels.

* Outfit options: If desired, bring two outfits, including appropriate shoes and accessories.

* Touch-up makeup: This will allow you to enhance your natural look during the session.

* Water bottle: Stay hydrated, especially during warmer sessions.

* Warm clothing: A coat or cover-up will be necessary for colder sessions.

Remember, the most important aspect of your engagement session is to feel comfortable and confident in your attire. By choosing an outfit that aligns with your personal style and makes you feel confident, you can create lasting memories.

To enhance your engagement session, consider making it a memorable occasion by reserving a table at a restaurant you’ve been eager to visit or planning a brunch meeting at your favorite spot, especially if we are meeting at sunrise.

Despite the numerous decisions to make, prioritize the enjoyment of this special phase of your engagement.
