Why should I have a maternity photo shoot?

Over the years of photographing expecting moms, I have come up with several reasons why I believe in the importance of having a maternity photo shoot. I did my best to narrow all of my thoughts down to my reasons

This photo is a maternity portrait set in a lush forest. The expecting mother is lying gracefully on a uniquely sculpted wooden bench made from large natural tree roots, which adds a rustic and artistic element. She wears a form-fitting dark dress that highlights her baby bump, and she gazes calmly at the camera. The natural surroundings and earthy tones create a peaceful, grounded atmosphere that blends beauty, strength, and motherhood.

You will miss the belly bump without maternity photos

Pregnancy is a lovely experience, but it’s not always a breeze. While you might enjoy the perks like radiant skin, gorgeous hair, and a cute baby bump, you’ll also face the challenges like swollen ankles, mysterious tiger stripes, and mood swings. It sounds exciting, right? But since expectant moms often don’t look or feel their best, they might wonder if they should take maternity photos. As they scroll through Instagram, they can feel big, especially when they compare themselves to the perfect-looking Insta-mama who goes for a ten-mile walk every day and shares it in her stories.

Even if you don’t feel like you’re acing this whole pregnancy thing, you should still take maternity photos. Pregnancy can have its not-so-fun moments, but your body is doing something incredibly beautiful. You’ll never regret capturing this special change with maternity photos. Here are five reasons why every mama-to-be should book a maternity photo session.

You are and look beautiful on your maternity pictures

Pregnancy doesn’t always make you feel fabulous. Between the cankles, the constant craving for food, and the fact that your clothes don’t fit anymore, it can be a tough time.

In fact, most women feel less confident as their pregnancy goes on. Your growing belly might seem like a good excuse to skip taking photos for nine whole months, but it’s actually the opposite!

At the end of the day, you realize that you’re growing a human being, and that’s enough to celebrate! Dressing up in a way that shows off your bump, putting on some makeup, and treating yourself  for a photography session can be just what you need to lift your spirits and beat the pregnancy blues.

You might be surprised at how beautiful you look when you see your pictures after a maternity photo shoot

This is a dramatic underwater maternity portrait captured in black and white. The pregnant woman floats gracefully beneath the surface, her sheer fabric gown billowing like a trail behind her. Her pose, with one hand cradling her belly and her face turned upward, evokes serenity and strength. Light rays and bubbles enhance the ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere, highlighting the elegance and power of motherhood in a weightless, almost celestial environment.

A significant milestone for your children with you in your maternity photography

From the moment your little one arrives, time seems to zip by!

One minute, a nurse is showing you the ropes of swaddling, and the next, you’re on a wild goose chase with a toddler through the Target aisles.

You’ll miss the peaceful days of pregnancy, when you didn’t have to constantly check your diaper bag or wipes every time you went to the store. You’ll miss that your baby bump couldn’t argue with your toddler over popsicles.

As your child grows, you’ll probably find yourself reminiscing about your pregnancy days and the quietness of the house. You’ll cherish the memories of having such a tiny human growing inside you, and your maternity photos will be a lovely reminder of a time long gone.

Your kids will also enjoy seeing these pictures when they’re older. They’ll be mesmerized by how beautiful you were during your pregnancy.

They won’t notice the few extra pounds and the bags under your eyes from your lack of sleep. They’ll focus on something more important – the love in your eyes and the joy that shone through you.

Her relaxed posture and soft smile convey calmness, pride, and quiet anticipation. The high-key background and natural lighting give the image a timeless, elegant feel, highlighting the beauty and strength of motherhood.

There is no turning back!

Pregnancy is not the time to be cautious when it comes to planning a maternity shoot.

That baby is coming, and no matter how much you think you know about the timing, I guarantee that you’ll find that many moms have different experiences.

So, if you’re unsure about a maternity photo shoot and don’t know how to plan, I strongly recommend taking the plunge and scheduling one.

I can assure you that I haven’t had anyone regret having a maternity shoot, but I can certainly say that there are people who regret not taking a maternity photo shoot.

Memories to Remember

Having a maternity session with this little bundle of joy is a truly special moment. It’s like a one-of-a-kind experience that you’ll cherish forever.

Memories are a precious part of life, and their value is undeniable. While it’s true that some individuals may prioritize their own interests, the overall impact of memories on our lives is far-reaching and positive.

This striking underwater maternity photo captures a pregnant woman floating gracefully in a dark Tulum cenote. She wears a flowing, brightly colored dress that billows around her, creating a dreamy, ethereal effect. Her arched back and upward gaze emphasize a sense of freedom and serenity, while her reflection on the water's surface adds a surreal, artistic dimension to the image.

Photos are a treasure!

Maternity photos are a special gift for your little one. They’re like a time capsule that lets them peek into a world they’ll never know, the happy days of your parents as a couple before you were born. These photos are a reminder of your excitement and anticipation for meeting your child.

Your child might share these photos with their own little one. Imagine your grandchild, a grandchild who only knows you as the grandma who always gives them a big hug and a yummy cookie. These photos will give your grandchild a unique view of you, showing them you in a different light.

This gift is not just for your child, but for all the children who come into your family after them. It’s a wonderful present for you and your spouse too, a cherished memory that the whole family will treasure forever.

The bright blue ocean and clear sky create a vibrant, uplifting backdrop that highlights their happiness and anticipation.

Maternity photos will straighten the bond between your spouse and you

Pregnancy can sometimes put a strain on a relationship because of mood swings and the changes you’re going to have to make. But to stay positive, it’s important to think about the big picture instead of getting too caught up in the little things.

Taking maternity photos with your partner is a great way to strengthen your bond and celebrate the new life you’re bringing into the world. It’s like a final goodbye to being just a couple and hello to being a family.

Many dads don’t bond with their baby as much during pregnancy. Unlike their wives, they don’t experience pregnancy the same way, so it’s hard for them to get a deep attachment to the baby until it’s born.

They usually don’t connect with their newborn until they can play with it. This is different from moms, who often feel a strong bond with the baby while they’re pregnant.

Taking maternity photos can help new dads get a stronger emotional connection with their growing baby. And supporting your spouse’s bond with the baby can help you both feel closer again.

If this isn’t your first child, you can even include your older child in the maternity shoot. Many older siblings have a hard time adjusting to a new baby in the family. Taking pictures with their mom can help them understand that a new person is coming and even get them excited about the baby’s arrival!
